East Coast Tour 2005

Hello,

As many of you know I'm in the USA on the moment for a sort of working holiday. I'm going to a conference but I'm also visiting friends from my time in Princeton. It's going to be something of a university tour as people are now at MIT, Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I'm also visiting a friend in NY and giving a few presentations at UPenn and MIT.

I was nervous about my flight after all the recent British Airways / Gate Gourmet troubles, but the flight was on time and the food was OK. Terminal four of Heathrow airport is a complete mess however, but that's not exactly news. The US side of the flight was stunning as we went down the East coast over places like main and there were lots of lakes and islands. Before landing we circled around Boston as the sun was setting, which was a pretty stunning introduction. Very surprisingly the foreigner immigration queue was shorter than the American one! Combined with having got away with just carry-on, this meant I was out of the airport and being driven to the centre of Boston within fifteen minutes of getting off the plane.

Last night we grabbed some Malaysian food - a very tasty Mango chicken dish - and then watched a movie at Yoni's place. The view from Yoni's balcony is awesome. The river and the surrounding bays are really well used for sailing. There were a few boats out first thing this morning, but it's been bustling all afternoon - I'm highly jealous as it's gorgeous day for sailing. Today I got a bit of a city tour and it's a very pleasant city. I'm in Boston for a few more days before going to New Haven and then Mystic for the conference.

Cheers,

Ali
